Level 4 Outdoor Leader Fundamentals

 

 

Scope of Leadership

  • This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to operate independently under indirect supervision and lead participants in a specific outdoor activity, where the emphasis is on safety, in low technical yet dynamic outdoor environments.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of planning and preparing an outdoor activity for participants in low-technical environments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of weather processes in decision-making to lead outdoor activities.
  • Demonstrate leadership knowledge and how to operate within the scope of an organisation's safety management plan.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and operate under a framework of kaitiakitanga in outdoor recreation.

Level 5 Outdoor Instructor Fundamentals

Scope of Leadership

  • This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to operate independently and provide instruction and leadership for participants during specific outdoor activity. The emphasis of this qualification is on developing participants’ competence through safe, sequenced, learning experiences in dynamic outdoor environments.

Learning Outcomes

Principles of teaching and learning in the outdoors

  1. Understand learning theories that are relevant for outdoor instruction and know how to apply them to instruct a specific outdoor adventure activity
  2. Understand teaching practices for outdoor instruction and know how to apply them to instruct a specific outdoor adventure activity
  3. Understand facilitation techniques that support the needs of learners In outdoor activities and how to apply them to support student learning

Plan and prepare to lead outdoor activities.

  1. Plan and prepare for instructing outdoor adventure activities that meet the needs of learners.
  2. Work within an organisation’s safety management system when planning to lead outdoor adventure activities.
  3. Use your own judgement to assess and manage an emergency care situation
  4. Apply an understanding of weather factors when planning to lead outdoor recreation activities

Level 6 Senior Outdoor Instructor Fundamentals

Scope of Leadership

  • This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to lead, mentor and educate developing leaders, guides and instructors in specific outdoor activities. These individuals can also instruct and/or guide participants in high hazard and/or technically complex outdoor or recreational environments.
  • This qualification will further extend the instructional competence of individuals who already hold extensive applied instructing experience in dynamic, multiple-hazard outdoor activities.
  • Graduates of this qualification are able to work independently and contribute to the daily operation of, and work under, a Safety Management System (SMS).

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse and evaluate risk and safety management policy, procedures and systems and make recommendations for improvements to safety systems ensuring consistency with current industry good practice and compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Critique and apply contemporary leadership theory that support the development of outdoor instructors including induction and training
  • Apply and evaluate pedagogical principles to educate instructors how to instruct or guide a range of skills in outdoor adventure activities.
