Overview

Scope

This qualification will enable you to lead, mentor and educate developing leaders, guides and instructors in specific outdoor activities. You can also instruct and/or guide participants in high hazard and/or technically complex outdoor or recreational environments.

This qualification will further extend the instructional competence of individuals who already hold extensive applied instructing experience in dynamic, multiple-hazard outdoor activities.

About This Qualification

Who is this for?

This NZC in Outdoor Senior Leadership qualification will provide organisations with staff who have demonstrated competency to perform many of the duties of a Senior Outdoor Instructor and/or Safety Manager and/or Training Manager. These duties may include delivering internal training for staff, verifying the competence of staff to undertake the roles expected of them, reviewing and adjusting an organisation's safety management plan, supporting an organisation to meet its safety obligations including ensuring capability to operate safely in advanced and dynamic outdoor environments.

Background:

The HSWA (2015) places high expectations on employers to ensure their staff are actively engaged in health and safety matters and that staff are competent to undertake the roles required of them.

The Safety Audit Standard for the Adventure Activities Regulations requires Operators to ensure staff have their competence verified through appropriate processes of assessment and revalidation and it is noted that nationally recognised qualifications should be used where relevant.

There has been a lack of opportunity for training and qualifications for Senior Instructors to upskill and provide evidence of competence in advanced professional practices. This is a chance for professionals who have extensive experience in the outdoors industry to undertake further professional learning and development and gain a qualification recognising their skills and depth of expertise in the sector.

Graduate profile

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Implement and review policies and systems to manage risk and safety for an outdoor activity operation within the parameters of an organisation’s safety management system;
  • Apply specialised technical knowledge and experience to manage the provision of outdoor recreation activities in a range of dynamic environments;
  • Select and apply a range of pedagogical principles and practices to educate individuals in the instruction and/or guidance of a range of technical competencies for specific outdoor activities.
