EOTC Instructor Qualifications
Level 4 EOTC Leader
Scope of Leadership
- This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to operate independently under indirect supervision, and lead participants in a specific outdoor activity, where the emphasis is on safety, in low technical yet dynamic outdoor environments.
- Graduates of the Education Outside The Classroom strand will also be able to act independently and with in-depth knowledge of EOTC and the New Zealand Curriculum to be Teacher in Charge (TIC) of events and trips in outdoor settings
Learning Outcomes
- Assess and respond to an EOTC event emergency
- Develop a plan for leading EOTC activities
- Demonstrate group and safety management while leading EOTC activities
- Lead an EOTC outdoor activity that supports student learning
- Review and evaluate leadership of an EOTC experience
Topics Include
- responding appropriately in an emergency care situation;
- identifying and managing risks relevant to participants, site and equipment;
- effective safety management including role modelling organisational practice;
- contribute to an organisation’s safety management system as relevant to the activity
- Leave No Trace principles to manage impact on the environment during the activity;
- local iwi and hapū, including culturally significant sites such as wahi tapu and land access issues;
- interpretive information on natural history, flora and fauna and the uniqueness of the environment in which the adventure activity occurs.
- leading and communicating information clearly to a group, including briefing and debriefing and skill requirements in accordance with organisational requirements;
- understanding the responsibilities and operating scope of the EOTC leader role;
- Understanding how NZ Curriculum relates to EOTC
- Activity planning including weather, students learning needs, equipment, and timing;
- leadership including managing safety, timeframes, resources and equipment for the activity and responding to participant needs.

Prerequisites
The following outlines hours and experience that must be completed for the qualification to be awarded. We recommend participants start with all of these conditions met. You will need to provide a plan that clearly shows how you will demonstrate these conditions before the final date of the qualification.
experience as an Assistant Leader on at least five half-day EOTC events and have been a Leader on at least two half-day EOTC events.
Level 5 EOTC Teacher in Charge
Scope of Leadership
- This qualification will provide the outdoor recreation sector with individuals who are able to operate independently and provide instruction and leadership for participants during specific outdoor activity. The emphasis of this qualification is on developing participants’ competence through safe, sequenced, learning experiences in dynamic outdoor environments.
- Graduates of this qualification are able to work independently and contribute to the daily operation of, and work under, a Safety Management System (SMS).
- Graduates of the Education Outside The Classroom strand will also be able to act independently and with in-depth knowledge of EOTC and the New Zealand Curriculum to be Teacher in Charge (TIC) of events and trips in outdoor settings.

- Apply knowledge of risk and safety management planning for an EOTC activity
