Bronze Adventurous Journey
Welcome to the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey Section. Congratulations on signing up and starting the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award! Below you will find information on our Bronze training, practice and qualifying journeys. We have designed our events to cater to all levels of experience, including those of you that have never been tramping before.
An expedition is an assessed venture that is in the same mode of transport to that done for the practice journey. Group members should be of similar age and level of experience within groups of 4 to 7. At Bronze level the requirements are: Practice Journey – 2 days and 1 night with 6 hours of activity during the day. Qualifying Journey – 2 days and 1 night with at least 6 hours of activity during the day. To make a booking select an event from the calendar and follow the process. |
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Training and PracticeThis is a combined event. Some of the training is delivered on the practice tramp. You can sign up for separate training or practice events if preferred.
We combine our training and practice events for two reasons:
On Day 2 you meet at the start of the track and head off for your practice tramp. During the practice tramp you will cover the rest of the training syllabus. Once again, the training you receive is relevant and applied in the environment you are training to become familiar with. Training

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh TrainingAll of our training is active, engaging and hands on. You will gain knowledge and skills over these two days that will prepare you for your first practice tramp.
You will get to put up a tent and cook using a camp cooker safely as well as learn how to pack a tramping pack and what food, clothing and equipment to take before setting out for your practice tramp. Our training aims to provide you with a good foundation in the following topics:
Location: AdventureWorks Challenge Course Mount Albert Unitec Campus Building 41 Turn right soon after entering Gate 3. Duration: 1 day – 9:00am to 4:00pm Cost: $100 + booking fee |
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh PracticeStudents must have completed their Bronze Training before undertaking their Bronze Practice.
The purpose of the practice tramp is to introduce the students to the experience of packing a pack, carrying it to the campsite, preparing the campsite, preparing a meal, sleeping in a tent and tramping back. For many this may be the first experience of this sort. The tramp is not designed to be as long or as challenging as the qualifying journey. There will be a lot of learning that occurs on the practice tramp, this is a great opportunity to work out what is necessary and what is not so that when you prepare for the qualifying journey you are not carrying more than what you need. We view the practice tramp as another learning opportunity. Our qualified instructors will make use of teaching and learning opportunities while the group is on the go. Location: Auckland Region Duration: 2 days Cost: $200 + booking fee Minimum number of participants is 5. |

Using the skills and knowledge gained from the training day and practice tramp, you will set off with your team to complete your first expedition. You are responsible for turning up with the right equipment and the right attitude to complete a challenging overnight tramp. Your AdventureWorks instructor will be there to support you and offer guidance but as much as possible you and group need to be independent making your decisions.
