Who is this for and what will you learn?
- You know you are passionate and enthusiastic about being in the outdoors and would love to learn the skills and gain the knowledge to be able to develop future career options
- The purpose of this qualification is to provide the outdoor and adventure education sector with instructors who are capable of operating within the safety management plan of an organisation under indirect supervision
- Learn about outdoor instruction techniques and skills, learn about safety management systems within organisations and how to run safe and enjoyable and meaningful outdoor experiences for others
- Learn about and apply teaching pedagogy, leadership theory, program design and reflective skills
- Gain work in an exciting industry full of diverse career options.

Applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria may be admitted to the programme of study if they are able to demonstrate:

Additional entry requirements
Applicants must be 16 years of age at the start date of the programme of study.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview to determine their suitability due to restrictions relating to age or medical or physical conditions in order to comply with legal health and safety requirements.
Selection criteria
Entry to programme will be in order of receipt of completed enrolment
Applicants should demonstrate an ability to work independently, completing tasks including reading and writing.
- New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (Level 3) or
- New Zealand certificate in Assistant Outdoor Leadership Level 3 or
- Comparable Level 3 qualification or 24 credits at NCEA Level 1; including 12 credits in English or Te Reo Maori; or a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2 or above; or equivalent.

PROGRAMME INFORMATION
- 120 credits.
- 38 weeks full-time (4 days per week on campus with supported online learning). We would like you to be able to work in the industry while studying.
- Mostly tutor directed teaching supported online learning and self-directed learning.
- Each week will include a combination of classroom and outdoor learning. The classroom work will be based in Mt Albert and the outdoor activity learning will be in Auckland/Northland and Waikato regions. We will provide transport for off-site events.
- Work experience in developing industry connections as a integral part of building a career in the outdoors. This program includes opportunities to meet future employers, to work with them so that you can get to know them and they can get to know you.

This programme qualifies for the government’s free fees scheme. This entitles people who meet the conditions to complete one year of study under the scheme.
