Why choose this programme?
This program will assist you in:
- Developing personal skills and confidence in Outdoor Recreation activities.
- Developing leadership confidence.
- Learning how to lead groups
- Identifying and managing hazards and risks.
- Communicating with individuals and groups.
- Operating under a framework of kaitiakitanga – guardianship and environmental sustainability.
Who is this for?
- Anyone with an interest in the outdoors who doesn’t have a lot of personal experience.
- We are not looking for the next bear grills for this program. This is an entry-level program and activities will be delivered to meet all participants abilities and confidence.
- Anyone interested in working in the outdoors that would like to explore what it’s like to be an outdoor leader.
- Participants that are planning on going to an American summer camp and would like a thorough training opportunity as a leader of groups before they go.
Entry requirements
Academic achievement
Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications or courses of study:
NCEA Level 1
or
Equivalent NZQF Unit Standards
Life skills/work experience
Applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria may be admitted to the programme of study if they are able to demonstrate:
Equivalent knowledge
Additional entry requirements
Applicants must be 16 years of age at the start date of the programme of study.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview to determine their suitability due to restrictions relating to age or medical or physical conditions in order to comply with legal health and safety requirements.
Selection criteria
Entry to programme will be in order of receipt of completed enrolment

Most school leavers will be eligible for fees free entitlement to cover this program fee.
If you are eligible for fees frees, participating in this program will use 40 credits of your 120 credit total entitlement. In other words you will use one third of your one year's allocation that the government is providing.

Programme Information
- 40 credits.
- 6 weeks, full-time (5 days per week, includes multi-day overnight trips).
- Mostly tutor directed teaching with some self-directed learning.
- Each week will include a combination of classroom and outdoor learning. The classroom work will be based in Mt Albert and the outdoor activity learning will be in Auckland/Northland and Waikato regions. We will provide transport for off-site events.
What can this qualification lead to?
This qualification will lead onto a variety of other qualification options or provide opportunities for people to gain entry level jobs and organisations in order to progress training in the workplace.
